I’ve always wanted to be able to offer a true herbal apprenticeship, and the time is now! The value of being able to work closely with an herbalist is immeasurable. I am pleased to be able to offer this opportunity now at an advanced level.
The Herbalist Apprenticeship is designed to guide you to fully embody the herbal experiences and plant knowledge you have been building. One of the most powerful ways of doing that is through teaching. My goal is to provide you with instruction, practice, support, and the opportunity for the real-life experience of teaching herbalism to our Level 1 students in the field. The Apprenticeship will provide an unparalleled opportunity to teach on a regular basis during Saturday classes. It will also include extensive preparation with Ginger, Lauren, and other teachers to help you succeed and ensure that you have all the tools you need to be able to teach.
Components of the Apprenticeship are:
1. Coaching & Teaching Prep (Wednesday nights)
2. Teaching Level 1 (Saturdays)
3. Botany: Terminology, Plant Families, Local Plant IDs (Review & Expand knowledge)
4. Materia Medica / Plant Constituents / Best extraction/preparation methods for each plant / constituent
5. Individual Mentoring (up to 2 hours per month with Ginger)
The Apprenticeship lasts 10 months, beginning in August to prepare for the first Saturday teaching in October. We will meet Wednesday evenings via Zoom 2-4x a month over the course of the 10 months. During these apprenticeship meetings (as well as for homework), we will prepare and delve deeper into the lessons for the upcoming Saturday classes. You will hone your botany skills, as well as dive deep into specific herbs, similar to the way you did with your presentations at the end of level one. Some meetings, we will have practice sessions where you will be able to present what you have prepared. I am there to coach you and make sure that what you teach is accurate, coherent, and that you feel confident sharing your knowledge! You will also be guided in creating handouts on specific topics.
Each Saturday class, the Herbalist Apprentices (in teams of two) will teach a small group of Level 1 students (7-8 people) a predetermined and prepared topic (e.g. particular plants, or an aspect of botany) in the wild. Teaching on Saturdays and a few of the Monday night Zoom classes are a required component of the course, but Apprentices will also be invited to participate in all Monday night Zoom classes to review material covered in Level 1.
In addition to our group meetings, Ginger will be available for one-on-one mentoring with individual Apprentices to focus on their specific goals, for up to 2 hours each month.
