This is a collaborative class with Co-teachers Ginger Webb of Sacred Journey School of Herbalism and Caroline Riley of Mutable Earth Botanicals. The Village Herbalist is for those of us who want to dive into the energetics of herbalism, medicine-making, and medicinal plant cultivation. We will work towards feeling empowered to understand, grow, and prepare herbal remedies in community.
During this five class series, we will explore the 5 tastes: Salty, Sweet, Bitter, Pungent, and Sour, and focus on medicinal plants that grow locally throughout the seasons, one taste per class. Each of these tastes dictates how the plants actively work with our body, mind and spirit. These herbal actions direct us to how the herbs will best support our health and wellbeing. Together, during each class, we will share recipes and prepare plant remedies that you will get to take home with you!
This class also focuses on permaculture cultivation techniques specific to our area including garden design, soil health and propagation. Students receive seeds, starts and divisions of plants to start their own medicinal garden. It is our hope that with each Village Herbalist class we are sending a new group of herbalists out into the world to support the health and resilience of greater community.

INSTRUCTORS
Ginger Webb has been practicing herbalism for over 25 years, as a community herbalist, clinical herbalist, herbal medicine maker, wild plant lover, botanist, and teacher. She makes and sells herbal medicine through her company Texas Medicinals, and has trained scores of people to be herbalists through her programs at Sacred Journey School of Herbalism. Her mission is to keep alive the craft of herbalism through modeling the age-old wisdom of being in right relationship with the plants, and she teaches her students to be stewards of the Earth and the plants first, and to make medicine only when the plants wholeheartedly provide consent. After living in Austin for over 30 years, Ginger now lives on wild land in Wimberley, Texas. Ginger counts many teachers along her herbal path, most notably Michael Moore (1999 SWSBM graduate) and Sage Maurer (Gaia School of Healing & Earth Education).
Caroline Riley is a Texas native who grew up in the garden and free ranging on the Texas coast with her family. She founded the Whole Life Learning Center in 2011 with her husband. This holistic learning center for children ages 3-14 years is where she focuses her efforts, stewarding the almost 2 acre food forest and living classroom. The gardens are full of native and adapted edible and medicinal plants which are harvested, prepared and sold through Mutable Earth Botanicals. You can find her here amongst the plants, cultivating community health and resilience. She facilitates permaculture design courses onsite through Austin Permaculture Guild and loves gathering in the gardens with people of all ages. When not at the learning center Caroline can be found searching out cool waters for swimming and enjoying the retreat of her South Austin home with her family.
