The Village Herbalist 2021 – 2022

We're sorry, but all tickets sales have ended because the event is expired.

This is a collaborative class with Co-teachers Ginger Webb of Texas Medicinals and Caroline Riley Carberry of 7Feathers Apothecary. The Village Herbalist is for those of us who want to dive into community herbalism and medicinal plant cultivation. We will work towards feeling empowered to understand, grow, and prepare medicinals for the health of ourselves and community.

During this six class series, we will explore medicinal plants that grow locally throughout the seasons, one taste at a time. The tastes include: Salty, Sweet, Bitter, Pungent, Aromatic, and Sour. Each of these tastes dictate how the plants actively work with our body, mind and spirits. These herbal actions direct us to how the herbs will best support our health and wellbeing.

We prepare plant remedies and share recipes during each class that the students take home. We also explore regenerative cultivation techniques including garden design, soil health and propagation. Students receive seeds, starts and divisions of plants to start their own medicinal garden.

It is our hope that with each Village Herbalist class we are sending a new group of herbalists out into the world to support the health and resilience of greater community.

Course Updates due to Covid-19:

While learning about plants and gaining a deep understanding of herbal medicines is always of value, we feel that during a pandemic it is especially valuable. This is an important time to be doing this work and we are committed to continuing our classes in engaging and safe ways.

All Sacred Journey School of Herbalism classes are operating in accordance with the guidelines suggested by the American Herbalists Guild and our Local & State Governments. While we cannot see the future, we are basing our plans on the current guidelines and will always have the option to adjust if they become more or less restrictive at any time.

Classes will be held outdoors and masks will not be required. All teachers are vaccinated.

INSTRUCTORS
Ginger Webb is a community herbalist, mother, certified Kundalini Yoga Teacher, permaculturist, and wild plant lover/expert. She has owned and operated Texas Medicinals since 1999, supplying Central Texas with high quality herbal medicine. She is the Founder, Director and Primary Instructor of Sacred Journey School of Herbalism, which offers an 8-month, 200-hour herbalist training program, along with Community Classes, Kitchen Witchery Classes, and Advanced Level courses. Her intention is not just to train people to become herbalists, but most importantly to help awaken and nurture their innate love for the plants and the earth. Ginger counts many teachers along her herbal path, most notably Michael Moore (1999 SWSBM graduate) and Sage Maurer (Gaia School of Healing & Earth Education). She is one of the pillars of the Central Texas herbalist community and may be best known for combining the ancient wisdom of the chakra system with Western herbal medicine in her Materia Medica.

Caroline Riley Carberry is a Texas native who grew up in the garden and free ranging on the Texas coast with her family. She discovered permaculture design while living in Colorado in 2004 and soon incorporated the ethics and principles into her Montessori classroom as a foundation to learn from nature with youth. With a passion for experiential learning and regenerative design, Caroline instructs Permaculture Design Courses through Austin Permaculture Guild. Her goal is to create a unique learning opportunity for her students from her vast experience. Caroline has studied permaculture with many great instructors, including Geoff Lawton, Warren Brush, Judd Hobbs and Dick Pierce.

She founded the Whole Life Learning Center in 2011 with her husband. This holistic learning center for children ages 3-14 years is where she focuses her efforts, stewarding the almost 2 acre micro farm and living classroom. The gardens are full of native and adapted edible and medicinal plants which are harvested, prepared and sold through 7Feather Trading Post. You can find her here amongst the plants, next to the pond or laughing with the goats, chickens, ducks and children.

When not at the learning center Caroline can be found searching out cool waters for swimming and enjoying the retreat of her South Austin home with her family.
